Traveling on spring break doesn’t work very well in this family. We’re at a point right now where we need to make our fun right here at home. I’ve heard people discussing their “second act”. In their 50’s after doing one thing for most of their lives they decide to change it up and steer their careers another direction. Well, we can’t steer our “career” in another direction exactly, but there are lots that we can do with this acre of ours that make life exciting. So, since two of the kids, the ones who are able to care for pets, are on their extended spring break we did this.

I like the idea of raising them from chicks rather than purchasing them full grown and already producing eggs. I’ve never been real comfortable around birds, so I thought for myself it’d help me become comfortable if I handled them from the beginning. For the kids, I thought it’d be a great learning experience to watch them grow.

Although Ella was more excited about getting the chickies, we’ve been talking about it a long time and even had a coop ready to go late last summer, Jacob has spent more time with them and seems more comfortable handling them.
He named his chick Angel.
Don’t know yet if we’re going to keep them all, but Angel will be a definite keeper. Ella is still working on various names for the others. Mark thought they should be named Scrambled, Omelet, Over Easy, you get the picture. Ella just rolled her eyes.

They are in need of a bedding change, so here we go. I’m thinking in a few more weeks we’ll be very anxious to get them outside. Now, if this endless winter would just cooperate and warm up.
